Agroforestry (Ing.)
Agroforestry is a Master’s study program focused on connecting agriculture, forestry, ecology, and landscape planning. It prepares experts for the design, management, and evaluation of agroforestry systems in Central European conditions.
About the Program
Are you interested in the landscape, nature, and finding ways to connect agriculture, forestry, and biodiversity protection?
Agroforestry is a joint Master’s study program of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra and the Technical University in Zvolen. It is a program focused on the integrated use of agricultural and forest landscapes with an emphasis on agroecology, landscape planning, and sustainable land management.
During your studies, you will integrate knowledge from crop production, forestry, animal production, ecology, bioeconomy, public policies, and digital landscape modeling. The program is oriented towards preparing experts capable of designing, managing, and evaluating agroforestry systems in Central European conditions.
How is the program focused?
The program builds on an interdisciplinary approach and connects theory with a practical focus on multifunctional land use.
- Integrated Land Use: connects agricultural and forest landscapes in one study program.
- Agroforestry Systems: focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of multifunctional agroforestry systems.
- Sustainable Management: emphasizes the protection of biodiversity, soil, water, and the efficient use of natural resources.
- Climate Change Adaptation: prepares for solutions related to climate and environmentally sensitive systems.
What will be in your schedule
Core Courses
- Introduction to Agroforestry
- Establishment and Cultivation of Forest Trees in Agroforestry Systems
- Dendrology in Agroforestry
- Timber Harvesting and Transport in Agroforestry Systems
- Agroforestry Systems
- Nature-Friendly Landscape Management
- Crop Production in Agrosystems
- Animal Production in Agrosystems

What will you learn to do?
- design agroforestry systems in Central European conditions in accordance with applicable legislation,
- select suitable crops and woody plants, assess cultivation technologies, and plan mechanization,
- evaluate soil nutrition, moisture, and biological activity according to site conditions,
- analyze the landscape using geographic information systems, remote sensing, and field surveys,
- identify land use conflicts and propose solutions with regard to ecological stability,
- evaluate project sustainability, bioeconomic systems, and circular economy strategies,
- provide advice to landowners and land users on the establishment and management of agroforestry systems,
- present project results to both professional and general public.
Theory Connected with Practice
The originality of the program lies in its interdisciplinary approach, combination of theory and practice, and focus on climate and environmentally sensitive systems, which are not the subject of any other study in Slovakia.
The study aims to enable graduates to design agroforestry projects, evaluate their impact on the landscape, and provide advice to landowners and land users interested in improving soil, water, and air quality, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity support.
What will you work with during your studies?
During your studies, you will encounter topics that connect production, landscape, ecology, woody plants, farm animals, and spatial planning:
- agroforestry systems and their design,
- crop, forest, and animal production,
- establishment and cultivation of forest trees in agroforestry systems,
- dendrology, fruit growing, grassland, and pasture management,
- hunting, beekeeping, and farm animal breeding,
- landscape planning and digital landscape modeling,
- bioeconomy, commercial commodities, and public policies,
- ecosystem services, biodiversity, soil, water, and carbon sequestration.
Connecting Landscape, Production, and Ecology
The program works with new land use practices that integrate the cultivation of woody plants on agricultural land in combination with agricultural crops or farm animals. This approach forms the basis of multifunctional land use.
Where the program will take you
A graduate of the second degree of agroforestry studies is prepared for professional and managerial positions in areas related to the design, implementation, and management of agroforestry systems in the landscape.
Graduates find employment in the design and implementation of agroforestry measures, expert consulting for landowners and agricultural entities, as well as in the planning and management of projects focused on sustainable management and landscape adaptation to changing climatic conditions.
Graduates are prepared to work in state administration, regional development agencies, non-profit organizations, agricultural enterprises, and the academic and private sectors, focusing on agroforestry, agroecology, landscape planning, and environmental assessment.
What makes the program unique?
The Only Program of Its Kind
It focuses on the integrated use of agricultural and forest landscapes with a practical emphasis on agroforestry systems.
Connection of Two Universities
It connects the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra and the Technical University in Zvolen.
